Sybaris is the name of an ancient city, which was built in approx. 720 BC., by the Greek in Southern Italy. It was situated on a plain between the two rivers Krathis and Sybaris. The area was very fertile and the inhabitants of Sybaris were known for the luxurious way in which they lived. "To enjoy as much as possible" was life's goal of the true Sybarian. The good life was ended when the city, only 200 years after its foundation, was destroyed by an enemy, but the tradition is continued by the clipper Sybaris. Apart from the year that is was built (1894), the name of the shipyard (Van Vlaardingen), the names of the ship (Evert, Susanne, Anne and Greuns), and the previous owners (S. Ypma, J. Zwiers en M. Demmer), the only thing known about the ship is that she received her first engine only in 1951. The original deckhouse had to make place for a more modern salon deckhouse. The original fan shaped clipper bow was pulled straight and flattened, in an attempt to modernise the ship. The restoration in 1994 however, restored the deckhouse and bow in the original state.
Since 1996 the Sybaris sails again!
